چکیده

Infrared spectroscopy has emerged as a premier experimental technique to probe enigmatic effects arising from strong correlations in solids. Herewe report on recent advances in this area focusing on common patterns in correlated electron systems including transition metal oxides, intermetallics and organic conductors. All these materials are highly conducting substances but their electrodynamic response is profoundly different from the canonical Drude behavior observed in simple metals. These unconventional properties can be attributed in several cases to the formation of spin and/or charge ordered states, zero temperature phase transitions and strong coupling to bosonic modes.

Stephen Parrott of Collective Electrodynamics by Carver

“In this book Carver Mead offers a radically new approach to the standard problems of electromagnetic theory. Motivated by the belief that the goal of scientific research should be the simplification and unification of knowledge, he describes a new way of doing electrodynamics—collective electrodynamics—that does not rely on Maxwell’s equations, but rather uses the quantum nature of matter as i...

Atoms and molecules in cavities, from weak to strong coupling in quantum-electrodynamics (QED) chemistry.

In this work, we provide an overview of how well-established concepts in the fields of quantum chemistry and material sciences have to be adapted when the quantum nature of light becomes important in correlated matter-photon problems. We analyze model systems in optical cavities, where the matter-photon interaction is considered from the weak- to the strong-coupling limit and for individual pho...

Electrodynamics of correlated electron systems: Based on 2008 Boulder School for Condensed Matter and Materials Physics Lectures

Physical and chemical systems can be characterized by their natural frequency ω and energy scales. It is hardly an exaggeration that most of what we know about such systems, from the acoustics of a violin to the energy levels of atoms, comes from their response to perturbations at these natural frequencies. For instance, chemists and biologists use infrared spectroscopy absorptions around 1650 ...

The elementary electronic properties of graphene

Quantum electrodynamics (QED) has made a clear understanding of phenomena from particle physics to astrophysics (high energy). But these phenomena have never observed in condensed matter system (low energy), until the discovery of graphene six years ago [1, 2]. The electron transport in graphene is essentially described by Dirac’s relativistic equation, not the non-relativistic Schrödinger equa...

Radiation Damping and Decoherence in Quantum Electrodynamics

The processes of radiation damping and decoherence in Quantum Electrodynamics are studied from an open system’s point of view. Employing functional techniques of field theory, the degrees of freedom of the radiation field are eliminated to obtain the influence phase functional which describes the reduced dynamics of the matter variables. The general theory is applied to the dynamics of a single...
